Pope Francis – In Memoriam
On March 13, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected the first Pope from the Americas. He was the first Pope to take the name of Francis, a name chosen in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 in the early morning of 21 April 2025. Known as The Pope of Pragmatic Humility, The Pope of the Poor, The Pope of Pastoral Tenderness, The Pope of Protecting the Environment, The Pope of Pandemic Prayer and Consolation, The Pope of Plain Talk, The Pope Proponent of the Marginalized, and The Pope of the People, The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington honors the life and legacy of Pope Francis. The Church encourages the faithful to remember Pope Francis not only for his reforms or teachings, but for the way he lived the Gospel.
