On Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 6:07 p.m. Rome time, white smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel chimney signaling to the world our new pope had been elected. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, from the Western Hemisphere, and took the name Pope Leo. Pope Leo XIV is the first pope from North America.
