Retired Priests Collection
Honor a Lifetime of Service of Our Retired Priests
Our priests enrich our lives in many ways: they baptize our children, comfort us in the confessional, witness our marriage vows and hold our loved ones hands as the Lord calls them home. Let’s join together to help provide care and housing for our retired priests so they can live their retirement in dignity.
Archdiocese of Washington priests have selflessly served the faithful and the community to continue Christ’s mission for decades, and in some cases, more than a half century.
Our priests have been there for each of us and our families in providing spiritual support – year in and year out – for our entire lives.
Please join the tens of thousands of the faithful in being there for them to assist in the dignity of their retirement and to honor their lives of service through support of the annual Retired Priests Collection.
This year’s retired priest collection takes place during the weekend of November 2nd and 3rd, 2024. This year, there are six ways to support the Retired Priests Collection:

IRA Transfers
If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 each year directly from your traditional IRA account to support the Retired Priests Collection.
This smart way to give may satisfy a portion or all of your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) and serve as a qualified charitable distribution for your IRA, which can save you on taxes even if you do not itemize! Contact your plan custodian to complete the IRA transfer. Call Joe Gillmer at (301) 853-5375 for assistance. The Archdiocese of Washington’s tax identification number (EIN) is 53-0196550.
Important note on IRA Transfers: This special way to give only applies to traditional or ROTH IRAs, not 401k, 403b or other types of retirement plans. In addition, you must be 72 years or older age when you are required to begin taking distributions.
Cryptocurrency (New!)
If you’re looking for ways to minimize taxes on your crypto investments and help the mission and ministries of the Church, consider making gifts of cryptocurrency! If you have held cryptocurrency for more than one year before donating, you will be eligible for the itemized charitable deduction for the fair market value of the cryptocurrency at the time of contribution. Further, if you are donating appreciated cryptocurrency, you will avoid capital gains taxes on the cryptocurrency you donate – a win-win! The Archdiocese of Washington has partnered with Engiven to make it easy for you to instantly donate dozens of types of cryptocurrency and to support a wide-variety of ministries. We’ll even help with required IRS 8282/8283 forms and appraisals at no cost to you. CLICK HERE to donate to the Retired Priests Collection with cryptocurrency.

Gifts of long-term, appreciated stocks and bonds provide a potential double benefit: You will be eligible for both a charitable tax deduction for the value of the securities on the day you transfer, and you may not be responsible for taxes on any gains from the time you acquired them.
