Statement from Cardinal Wuerl on the State of the Union
February 12, 2013
Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, issued the following statement today regarding the invitation by House Speaker John Boehner to be his guest at this evening’s State of the Union address:
“I am honored to accept Speaker Boehner’s invitation and to accompany to this evening’s State of the Union address two fourth-graders who attend Saint Anthony School in Northeast Washington, D.C. The students and I will be joined by Mr. Arthur Mola, principal at Sacred Heart School in Northwest Washington, D.C. Mr. Mola’s dedication to ensuring that all children have access to an excellent education is representative of the commitment of educators throughout our archdiocesan schools.
“Speaker Boehner has been a fervent supporter of educational opportunities for all children in the District of Columbia, particularly through his support of the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Children who reside in some of the neediest areas of our nation’s capital have the chance to receive a quality education through this highly successful program which is transforming the lives of so many young people in our community. In fact, this school year, there are 1,584 OSP Scholars attending private, parochial or independent elementary or high schools across the District. I am grateful to the Speaker for his continuing support of this successful program.”
