Meeting Commemorates Launch of New Scholas Occurrentes Washington, D.C. Chapter

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Washington Cardinal Wilton Gregory, students from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, and other young adults, faculty and guests, will participate on Thursday, May 20, in a live global videoconference with the Holy Father Pope Francis to announce the launch of a new Scholas Occurrentes chapter in Washington.

Scholas Occurrentes is an International Organization of Pontifical Right, begun by Pope Francis, which seeks “to answer the call to create a culture of encounter and bring young people together in an education that generates meaning,” according to its website. It is present through its network in 190 countries and reaches more than 1 million children.

During the videoconference, Pope Francis will address other communities that also celebrate the inauguration of new chapters or programs, including in Valencia, Spain; Chaco, Argentina; and Sydney, Australia.

Cardinal Gregory and two young adults will speak, and Pope Francis will bless the plaque for the new Washington, D.C. chapter. At the end of the meeting, there will be time for dialogue with the global community of Scholas Occurrentes in all five continents. The event will be in Spanish with a live person giving English voice translation.
