Special Masses and Pilgrimage Among Brookland Catholic Sites to be Celebrated June 8, 9, 2024

The local portion of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will feature reverent prayer at various locations in NE Washington, D.C. on Saturday, with an additional Mass on Sunday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thousands of Catholic pilgrims are expected to participate in an 8 a.m. Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday, June 8, 2024, followed by a procession along the streets of the Brookland neighborhood. At several stops along the two-mile route, pilgrims will join in prayers and songs of worship as the Eucharist is reverently carried at the head of the procession.

The procession will conclude with Benediction at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine at noon, followed by an educational program on the Eucharist, led by Auxiliary Bishop Evelio Menjivar.

During the time of the procession, a “stationary pilgrimage” will be held at the Saint John Paul II Shrine for those who are unable or prefer not to join the walk through Brookland.

A second Mass on Sunday, June 9, will be celebrated by Cardinal Wilton Gregory at noon at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A Eucharistic procession inside the Shrine will follow the Mass. Bishop Michael Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington will concelebrate the Mass and lead the procession in the Upper Church.

The events are the local component of the National Eucharistic Revival, a three-year initiative by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that aims to inspire, educate and unite Catholics in a more intimate relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist.

Media are welcome to attend any or all of the events.
