The Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, celebrated on September 3, honors one of the most impactful popes in Church history and a foundational Doctor of the Church. Born into Roman nobility around 540 A.D., Gregory served as the Prefect of Rome before hearing a distinct call from the Lord to renounce his wealth, sell his possessions, and give everything to the poor. He subsequently transformed his family’s villa on Mount Caelian into a Benedictine monastery, embarking on a life of deep monastic prayer and strict contemplation.

Reluctantly chosen by the clergy and people to assume the papacy at the age of 50, Pope Gregory became a true shepherd in a time of severe societal collapse, plague, and famine. He famously popularized the traditional papal title “servant of the servants of God,” anchoring leadership in absolute humility. Throughout his 14-year pontificate, he emptyied the papal treasury to aid refugees, protect persecuted communities, and ransom prisoners.
As a brilliant theologian and administrative organizer, he protected the memory of St. Benedict through a comprehensive biography and fundamentally shaped the structure of the Western liturgy. He is traditionally credited with codifying the beautiful, sacred musical style known as Gregorian Chant. He is recognized as the patron saint of England, Epilepsy, musicians, educators, and students.

La memoria de San Gregorio Magno, que se celebra el 3 de septiembre, honra a uno de los papas más influyentes en la historia de la Iglesia y a un Doctor de la Iglesia fundamental. Nacido en el seno de la nobleza romana hacia el año 540 d.C., Gregorio ejerció como prefecto de Roma antes de sentir una llamada clara del Señor a renunciar a su riqueza, vender sus posesiones y entregarlo todo a los pobres. Posteriormente, transformó la villa de su familia en el monte Celio en un monasterio benedictino, emprendiendo una vida de profunda oración monástica y estricta contemplación.
Elegido a regañadientes por el clero y el pueblo para asumir el papado a los 50 años, el Papa Gregorio se convirtió en un verdadero pastor en una época marcada por el grave colapso social, la peste y la hambruna. Es célebre por haber popularizado el título papal tradicional de «siervo de los siervos de Dios», fundamentando así el liderazgo en una humildad absoluta. A lo largo de su pontificado de 14 años, vació el tesoro papal para ayudar a los refugiados, proteger a las comunidades perseguidas y rescatar a prisioneros.
Como brillante teólogo y organizador administrativo, preservó la memoria de San Benito mediante una biografía exhaustiva y configuró de manera fundamental la estructura de la liturgia occidental. Tradicionalmente se le atribuye la codificación del hermoso y sagrado estilo musical conocido como canto gregoriano. Es reconocido como santo patrono de Inglaterra, de los enfermos de epilepsia, de los músicos, de los educadores y de los estudiantes.
