111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope” – Reflection Procession & Mass

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington held a Reflection Procession and solemn Mass in honor of the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

This year’s theme, chosen by the Holy Father, “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope,” calls us to recognize the courage and faith of those who leave everything behind in search of a better future.

The day began with a prayerful pilgrimage at 2:30 p.m., departing from the Shrine of the Sacred Heart (3211 Sacred Heart Way NW, Washington, DC) and concluding at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle (1725 Rhode Island Ave NW, Washington, DC). Together, we will walked in solidarity—lifting our voices, hearts, and prayers for those who journey in search of safety, dignity, and hope, and who continue to face profound challenges. Organized in partnership with Jesuit Refugee Service, the procession offered a powerful opportunity to foster compassion, understanding, and unity with migrants and refugees.

The celebration of the Eucharist at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle was held at 5:30 p.m. The principal celebrant was Cardinal Robert McElroy, Archbishop of Washington, whose presence marked this occasion with spiritual significance and pastoral care.

We invited people of all backgrounds to walk in reflection, solidarity, and prayer with migrants and refugees—learning from and honoring their stories.

La Arquidiócesis Católica Romana de Washington celebró una Procesión de Reflexión y una Misa solemne en honor a la 111.ª Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado el domingo 28 de septiembre de 2025.

El tema de este año, elegido por el Santo Padre, “Migrantes, Misioneros de la Esperanza”, nos llama a reconocer la valentía y la fe de quienes lo dejan todo atrás en busca de un futuro mejor.

El día comenzó con una peregrinación de oración a las 14:30 h, que partió del Santuario del Sagrado Corazón (3211 Sacred Heart Way NW, Washington, D.C.) y concluyó en la Catedral de San Mateo Apóstol (1725 Rhode Island Ave NW, Washington, D.C.). Juntos, caminaremos en solidaridad, elevando nuestras voces, corazones y oraciones por quienes viajan en busca de seguridad, dignidad y esperanza, y que continúan enfrentando profundos desafíos. Organizada en colaboración con el Servicio Jesuita a Refugiados, la procesión ofreció una poderosa oportunidad para fomentar la compasión, la comprensión y la unidad con las personas migrantes y refugiadas. La celebración de la Eucaristía en la Catedral de San Mateo Apóstol tuvo lugar a las 17:30 h. El celebrante principal fue el cardenal Robert McElroy, arzobispo de Washington, cuya presencia marcó esta ocasión con gran significado espiritual y pastoral.
