Media Advisory: Pope Francis Names New Archbishop of Washington, D.C.

Cardinal Robert W. McElroy becomes the eighth Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese in the nation’s capital.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert W. McElroy, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of San Diego, as the new Archbishop of Washington.

This appointment was publicized today in Washington, D.C. by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. See reporting in The Catholic Standard and El Pregonero, newspapers of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

Cardinal McElroy is a native of San Francisco, California, and a scholar of American history, political science, and moral and pastoral theology. He is a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.
