110^th World Day of Migrants and Refugees – “Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay.”

The Archdiocese of Washington invites you to commemorate the 110^th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which will occur at the Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle (1725 Rhode Island Ave NW, Washington, DC 20036) on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. The theme chosen this year by the Holy Father is “God Walks with His People.”  Bishop Evelio Menjivar, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, will be principal celebrant. God walks with His people

This year’s message, the Holy Father reminds us that all of us, God’s people, are migrants on this earth, on our way to the “true homeland,” the Kingdom of Heaven. Migrants are a contemporary icon of these people on a journey, of the Church on a journey, and at the same time, it is in them and in all our vulnerable brothers and sisters that we can encounter the Lord who walks with us.

The Church has been celebrating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) since 1914. It is always an occasion to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. Dios camina con Su pueblo

En el mensaje de este año, el Santo Padre nos recuerda que todos nosotros, Pueblo de Dios, somos migrantes en esta tierra, en camino hacia la “verdadera Patria”, el Reino de los Cielos. Los migrantes son un ícono contemporáneo de este pueblo en camino, de la Iglesia en camino y, al mismo tiempo, es en ellos y en todos nuestros hermanos y hermanas vulnerables donde podemos encontrar al Señor que camina con nosotros.

La Iglesia celebra la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado (JMMR) desde 1914. Siempre ha sido una ocasión para expresar nuestra preocupación por las diferentes categorías de personas vulnerables que se desplazan; para rezar por ellas mientras afrontan numerosos desafíos; y para sensibilizar sobre las oportunidades que ofrecen las migraciones.  Dicasterio para el Servicio del Desarrollo Humano Integral (DSDHI) – Vaticano.
