Booklet brings to life rich history of serving those in need in the local community
WASHINGTON – When Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington formed in 1922, it served 1,144 people in need at a cost of $18,588. Today, it is the largest private social service provider in the Washington area, serving 116,000 people a year at a cost of $77.5 million. This rich history of serving those in need in the Washington area is chronicled in a new publication, Catholic Impact 2014, produced in celebration of the archdiocese’s 75th anniversary.
Catholic Impact 2014 illustrates the wide-reaching impact that the Archdiocese of Washington has had on the lives of millions of people throughout the decades in the fields of education, social services and health care. Through the stories of those who have been helped, those who have made an impact on the lives of others and the archdiocese’s charitable agencies, the Church of Washington’s long history of serving those in need in the local community is brought to life.
“The stories highlighted in this report are just a few examples of how the Church makes an integral contribution to the well-being of this community in a way that enriches us all,” said Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington. “Together we continue to do what Jesus asked of us – to manifest his kingdom and thereby establish a realm of love, truth, justice and peace.”
These stories are also being featured on the archdiocese’s social media platforms, including a “Throwback Thursday” feature that highlights the historical legacy of Catholic service in the archdiocese by posting images from the archdiocese’s archives. The archdiocese has also produced a video overview of Catholic Impact 2014.
