Statement of Cardinal Donald Wuerl on three U.S. Bishops named to the College of Cardinals

Sunday, October 9, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It is with great joy that I received the news of the Holy Father’s announcement today of the elevation of three American brother bishops to the College of Cardinals.

I have had the privilege of working with Cardinal-designates Kevin J. Farrell, Joseph W. Tobin and Blase J. Cupich over the years in many different capacities in our service to the Church. This news is a wonderful recognition of each of the bishops and their gifts and abilities, as well as an honor for the Church in the United States. I offer each of them my heartfelt congratulations and prayerful best wishes. The Universal Church is well-served by these faithful and dedicated leaders.
