More than 2,000 to Graduate from 20 Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese of Washington

More than 2,000 seniors will graduate from the 20 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington at commencement ceremonies set for the end of May and the beginning of June.

Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Washington have seen an increase in enrollment over the last 10 years. During the 2012-2013 year, 10,089 students were enrolled in grades 9 – 12, an increase of 727 compared to the 2002-2003 school year. 44 percent of the students represent minority populations, and 33 percent are non-Catholic. The 20 high schools include five for young men, eight for young women, and seven that are coeducational. In addition, Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Institute in Northeast Washington provides early intervention and education, training and employment, therapeutic and residential services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. St. Ann’s High School of St. Ann’s Infant and Maternity Home in Hyattsville is a program for pregnant and parenting young women.

The 86 members of the Class of 2013 received over 186 acceptances from 103 different colleges, universities and international institutions. The class has earned over $4 million in scholarships to date, with additional scholarships still being awarded. Students receiving academic scholarship offers in excess of $100,000 included those admitted to such institutions as Georgetown University, Dartmouth College, The Ohio State, University of Virginia, Mount Holyoke College and Mount St. Mary’s University. The school has also seen an increase in the number of students choosing small liberal arts colleges, such as La Roche College, Goucher College and Morehouse. Many of the students will be the first in their families to attend college. Fifteen percent of the students are emigrants to the United States.

Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School and Corporate Work Study Program are celebrating 55 seniors in its third graduating class, with all of the students earning acceptance to college and awarded $4.4 million in merit and need-based scholarships to date.

Victoria Carlena Riley is the Class of 2013 Valedictorian and attending Georgetown University in the fall. Victoria gained great experience in her Corporate Work Study Program jobs, working at Boland, the Jesuit Conference, DLA Piper and NASA Goddard during her four years. The Salutatorian is Yicela E. Alvarado, who will be attending Towson University in the fall. Yicela’s Corporate Work Study Program jobs included KPMG, American Health Lawyers Association and Congressman Chris Van Hollen’s office, sponsored by TDF Foundation.
