Kelly Branaman named Secretary for Catholic Schools and Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Washington

Ms. Branaman assumes her new role August 17.

On Tuesday, Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory named Ms. Kelly Branaman as Secretary for Catholic Schools and Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Washington, effective August 17.

Ms. Branaman has served the archdiocese as associate superintendent for strategic planning and school operations since 2015, and since July 2020 has served as interim superintendent. Before joining the archdiocesan school team in 2003 as director of special education and support services coordinator, she worked for the Archdiocese of Louisville.

“It is with extreme confidence that I appoint Kelly Branaman as the new Secretary for Catholic Schools and Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Washington,” Archbishop Gregory said. “Since my own appointment in Washington, I have personally seen in Kelly a faith-driven and experienced school administrator, who has played a critical part in our Catholic Schools operations and planning since the beginning of this pandemic.”

As Secretary for Catholic Schools and Superintendent of Schools, Ms. Branaman will have oversight over the 91 Catholic schools, which includes early learning centers, elementary, and high schools of Washington, D.C., and five suburban and southern Maryland counties. These schools serve more than 26,000 students of diverse backgrounds.

“In Kelly, we have a leader who is pastoral, strategic, knowledgeable, approachable and dependable,” Archbishop Gregory said. “May God bless her as she assumes this important role for our Catholic School students.”
