The Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

On June 24, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. While we usually celebrate saints on the day they passed into eternal life, Saint John the Baptist is one of only three figures whose physical births we celebrate—the others being Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This unique honor highlights John’s extraordinary mission as the bridge between the Old and New Testaments.

John’s story begins with an unexpected miracle. Born to the elderly and barren Elizabeth and the priest Zechariah, his conception was announced by the Angel Gabriel. When Zechariah doubted, he was struck mute until the child was born. The moment Zechariah obediently wrote, “His name is John,” his tongue was loosed in a beautiful song of praise, the Benedictus. Even in the womb, John recognized his Savior, leaping for joy when Mary visited Elizabeth.

John the Baptist lived a life of radical humility, asceticism, and fiery conviction in the wilderness. He did not seek his own glory; instead, his entire life was focused toward Jesus Christ. As the precursor to the Messiah, he baptized with water to prepare hearts for the One who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of baptism, converts, religious devotion and godparents.

El 24 de junio celebramos la Solemnidad de la Natividad de San Juan Bautista. Si bien habitualmente celebramos a los santos el día en que pasaron a la vida eterna, San Juan Bautista es una de las únicas tres figuras de las que celebramos su nacimiento físico; las otras dos son Jesús y la Santísima Virgen María. Este honor singular destaca la extraordinaria misión de Juan como puente entre el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento.

La historia de Juan comienza con un milagro inesperado. Hijo de la anciana y estéril Isabel y del sacerdote Zacarías, su concepción fue anunciada por el ángel Gabriel. Cuando Zacarías dudó, quedó mudo hasta que nació el niño. En el momento en que Zacarías escribió obedientemente: «Su nombre es Juan», su lengua se soltó en un hermoso cántico de alabanza: el *Benedictus*. Incluso desde el seno materno, Juan reconoció a su Salvador, saltando de gozo cuando María visitó a Isabel.

San Juan Bautista vivió una vida de humildad radical, ascetismo y ardiente convicción en el desierto. No buscó su propia gloria; por el contrario, toda su vida estuvo orientada hacia Jesucristo. Como precursor del Mesías, bautizaba con agua para preparar los corazones para Aquel que bautizaría con el Espíritu Santo y fuego.

San Juan Bautista es el santo patrono del bautismo, de los conversos, de la devoción religiosa y de los padrinos.
