St. Paul VI, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council in 1964, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as “Mother of the Church,” that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother and established that “the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles.”

The feast recognizes Mary standing at the foot of the cross when Jesus gives us Mary as the Mother of the Church. As St. John Paul II once remarked, “Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church reflects the deep conviction of the Christian faithful, who see in Mary not only the mother of the person of Christ, but also of the faithful.”

Memorial de la Bienaventurada Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia

San Pablo VI, al concluir la Tercera Sesión del Concilio Vaticano II en 1964, declaró a la Santísima Virgen María como «Madre de la Iglesia» —es decir, de todo el pueblo cristiano, tanto de los fieles como de los pastores, quienes la invocan como la Madre más amorosa— y estableció que «la Madre de Dios sea honrada e invocada aún más por todo el pueblo cristiano con este título tan tierno».

Esta fiesta conmemora a María al pie de la cruz, en el momento en que Jesús nos entrega a María como Madre de la Iglesia. Como señaló en una ocasión San Juan Pablo II: El “Memorial de la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia refleja la profunda convicción de los fieles cristianos, quienes ven en María no solo a la madre de la persona de Cristo, sino también a la madre de los fieles.”
