On August 21, we honor Pope Saint Pius X. He was the 257th pope and is remembered as the “Pope of the Eucharist”. He dedicated his life to a beautiful motto: “To restore all things in Christ”.

Born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in 1835, he grew up in a very poor family in Italy. He did not come from wealth. As a boy, he had to walk long distances just to get to school. Even after he was chosen to lead the entire global Church in 1903, he was not a fan of the fancy clothes and pomp of the papal court. He famously cried to a friend, “Look how they have dressed me up!” He loved being simple and humble.

Reforming the Church

Saint Pius X made massive changes to help ordinary Catholics get closer to Jesus:

First Holy Communion: He lowered the age so young children could receive Jesus in the Eucharist.

Daily Mass: He strongly encouraged Catholics to receive Holy Communion frequently—even every day.

Sacred Music: He brought back traditional Gregorian chant music to make Mass more prayerful.

A Saint of Charity: He would secretly sneak out of the Vatican at night to visit and comfort the sick! He died on August 20, 1914, right as World War I began. He said he would gladly give his life to stop the horrible war. He was declared a saint in 1954.

El 21 de agosto honramos al Papa San Pío X. Fue el 257.º papa y se le recuerda como el «Papa de la Eucaristía». Dedicó su vida a un hermoso lema: «Restaurar todas las cosas en Cristo».

Nacido como Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto en 1835, creció en una familia muy pobre en Italia. No provenía de una familia adinerada. De niño, tenía que caminar largas distancias para ir a la escuela. Incluso después de ser elegido para dirigir la Iglesia universal en 1903, no le gustaban las vestimentas lujosas ni la pompa de la corte papal. Es famosa su frase: «¡Mira cómo me han vestido!». Amaba la sencillez y la humildad.

Reforma de la Iglesia

San Pío X realizó cambios trascendentales para ayudar a los católicos comunes a acercarse a Jesús:

Primera Comunión: Redujo la edad para que los niños pequeños pudieran recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía.

Misa Diaria: Animó encarecidamente a los católicos a recibir la Sagrada Comunión con frecuencia, incluso a diario.

Música sacra: Recuperó el canto gregoriano tradicional para hacer la Misa más devota.

Un santo de la caridad: ¡Se escapaba a escondidas del Vaticano por la noche para visitar y consolar a los enfermos! Murió el 20 de agosto de 1914, justo al comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Dijo que con gusto daría su vida para detener aquella terrible guerra. Fue canonizado en 1954.
