Statement on Appeals Court Ruling Striking Down California Marriage Law

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington

February 07, 2012

“The decision by two of the three judges on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel to overturn California’s ban on same-sex marriage is the latest action in an ongoing attempt to redefine marriage. What cannot be changed is the truth: marriage is the sacred institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and with the children born of their union. It is not the mere public recognition of a committed relationship for the sole benefit of two adults. While today’s action is disappointing, it will not be the final word on this issue as other states, including Maryland, consider legislation to change the meaning of the word “marriage”. I pray that all those entrusted with promoting the public good will reflect on the true meaning of this vital institution and work to preserve it.”
