Statement of the Archdiocese of Washington on Reauthorization of the Opportunity Scholarship Program in the SOAR Act

April 15, 2011

The reauthorization of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program in the SOAR Act is a promising step forward for education in the District of Columbia. Allowing the children of the District to once again have the opportunity to enter this successful program means the chance to help move children in our nation’s capital out of poverty. Parents once again will have the option of selecting a school that best fits the educational needs of their child, whether that program is through a public, charter or non-public school. This is a great day for the children of the District of Columbia. Access to quality education should not be denied because of one’s income or residence and Opportunity Scholarships give the young people of our nation’s capital hope for a better future.
