Statement of Cardinal Donald Wuerl on the Appointment of Bishop William Lori as the Archbishop of Baltimore
March 20, 2012
“It is with great joy that I welcome the appointment of Bishop William Lori as Archbishop of Baltimore. Bishop Lori and I have known each other for over 25 years through our work together at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and during his tenure as Auxiliary Bishop of Washington.
“Bishop Lori’s appointment is especially welcome as the Church addresses the question of challenges to religious freedom. Not only is he the chairman of the USCCB’s Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Freedom, but also he will be joining the bishops serving Maryland where we have already begun to address this issue with our statement, “The Most Sacred of All Property: Religious Freedom and the People of Maryland.”
“In addition, as Bishop Lori is the Supreme Chaplain to the Knights of Columbus, we Knights in Washington, D.C., and Maryland have a particularly special reason to welcome him to Baltimore.
“At this time, I also wish to express my profound appreciation for the example of service Cardinal Edwin O’Brien has provided the Church in Baltimore before being elevated to the College of Cardinals last month and taking on his new role with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He has been an exemplary leader of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and we will miss him and his pastoral guidance. May God’s blessings be with him as he embraces his new role.”
