Statement from Cardinal Donald Wuerl on the Death of Archbishop Philip Hannan

September 30, 2011

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Archbishop Philip Hannan, former Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington. A native of Washington, D.C., Hannan was ordained in 1939 and became one of the first priests of the newly established archdiocese. He faithfully served as priest and chancellor, and was the founding editor of our diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Standard, through which his lasting contribution to evangelization continues today.

We offer our prayers and sympathy to Archbishop Hannan’s family, friends and the many individuals whose lives he touched in his ministry over the decades and ask the Lord to grant him eternal rest.
