Read Archbishop Wuerl’s New Pastoral Letter: God’s Mercy and the Sacrament of Penance

February 14, 2007

Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl issued his first pastoral letter as Archbishop of Washington, God’s Mercy and the Sacrament of Penance, to coincide with the season of Lent.

In the letter he tells us, “The sacrament of Reconciliation is the story of God’s love that never turns away from us…Like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, God waits, watches and hopes for our return every time we walk away. Like the son in the parable, all we need to to return to our Father is to recognize our wrong and seek God’s love.”

To encourage Catholics to return to the Sacrament of Penance, a major pastoral initiative, The Light is On for You, will be undertaken throughout the Archdiocese of Washington this Lent. Our churches will be open for Confession every Wednesday from February 28-April 4, 2007, 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Visit www.the-light-is-on.org for maps and links to the parishes, frequently-asked questions about Confession and a guide on how to go to Confession.
