Priest Changes Announced for July 2009

Ten parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington plus a college Newman Center will have new leadership starting July 1, 2009. This is in addition to 16 other assignment changes. The shifts are part of a normal rotation of priests as well as the retirements of several pastors and the death of a pastor in April. The Archdiocese of Washington includes 140 Catholic parishes in Washington, DC and suburban and southern Maryland, serving 580,000 Catholics. The changes are below.

Montgomery County:

St. Raphael, Rockville: Reverend James Meyers, current pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Bethesda, is replacing Rev. G. William Finch, who passed away on April 9.

Our Lady of Lourdes, Bethesda: Monsignor Edward Filardi, current pastor of St. Stephen Martyr, Washington, DC is replacing Rev. James Meyers, the new pastor of St. Raphael, Rockville.

St. Francis of Assisi, Derwood: Rev. David Beaubien, current pastor of Holy Ghost, Issue, is replacing Rev. Lee Fangmeyer, the new pastor of St. Michael, Ridge.

Our Lady of the Presentation: Rev. Vincent Rigdon, current pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Washington, DC, is replacing Rev. Paul Herbert, the new pastor of St. Ignatius, Oxon Hill.

St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg: Rev. Thomas LaHood, current pastor of Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck, is replacing Rev. Rory Conley, the new pastor of St. Mary, Bryantown (effective July 15)

In other priest changes, Rev. John McKay will serve as chaplain for Catholics at Suburban Hospital. Parochial vicar appointments include Rev. John Caulfield to St. Bartholomew, Bethesda; Rev. Vincent DeRosa to St. Bernadette, Silver Spring; Rev. Patrick Riffle to St. Peter, Olney; Rev. Michael Tietjen to St. John the Baptist, Silver Spring; and Rev. Gary Villanueva to St. Mary, Rockville. Rev. L. James Downs, parochial vicar of St. Mary, Rockville, is retiring.

Prince George’s County:

St. Ignatius, Oxon Hill: Rev. Paul Herbert, current pastor of Our Lady of the Presentation, Poolesville is replacing Rev. Robert Finamore, who is retiring.

In other priest changes, Rev. John McKay, current chaplain for health care facilities in Laurel will move to Montgomery County to become chaplain for Catholics at Suburban Hospital with residence at St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Bethesda. Rev. Grantley Gaskin will become parochial vicar for St. Mary of the Mills, Laurel and Rev. Lawrence Swink, parochial vicar for St. Pius X in Bowie.

Southern Maryland:

St. Michael, Ridge: Rev. Lee Fangmeyer, current pastor of St. Francis of Assisi, Derwood, will replace Msgr. Maurice O’Connell, who will become a senior priest at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington, DC.

St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Indian Head: Rev. Robert Golas, currently a parochial vicar at St. Bernadette, Silver Spring, is replacing Rev. William Thompson, who is retiring.

Holy Ghost, Issue: Rev. Gregory Coan, currently a parochial vicar at Holy Redeemer, Kensington, will become parochial administrator, replacing Rev. David Beaubien, the new pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood.

St. Mary, Bryantown: Rev. Rory Conley, current pastor of St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg, will replace Rev. Lawrence Young, the new pastor of Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck (effective July 15).

Our Lady’s Church, Medley’s Neck: Rev. Lawrence Young, current pastor of St. Mary, Bryantown, is replacing Rev. Thomas LaHood, the new pastor of St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg (effective July 15).

Washington, DC:

Our Lady Queen of Peace, Ely Place, Southeast: Rev. Peter Giovanoni, chaplain for the George Washington University Newman Center, is replacing Rev. Vincent Rigdon, the new pastor of Our Lady of the Presentation, Poolesville.

St. Stephen Martyr, Foggy Bottom: Msgr. Robert Panke, director of priest vocations and formation, will continue in that position while also serving as parochial administrator through December 31, 2009. He is replacing Msgr. Edward Filardi, the new pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Bethesda.

George Washington University Newman Center: Rev. Gregory Shaffer, currently a parochial vicar at St. Andrew the Apostle, Silver Spring, is replacing Rev. Peter Giovanoni, the new pastor of Our Lady Queen of Peace.

In other priest appointments, Rev. David Werning, parochial administrator of Our Lady of Victory, has been named pastor of that parish; Msgr. Maurice O’Connell will become senior priest at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament; and Rev. Kevin Regan will become parochial vicar at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle.

More appointments will be made following ordination to the priesthood on June 20.
