Papal Honors to be Formally Conferred on 10 Priests

During an October 2 liturgy, 10 priests of the Archdiocese of Washington will formally receive honors bestowed on them by Pope John Paul II shortly before his April death. The priests, named “Chaplain to His Holiness” by the then-Pope now have the title of “Monsignor.” Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, will preside at the conferral of papal honors:

Msgr. Mark Brennan has been pastor of St. Martin of Tours, Gaithersburg, since June 2003. Ordained a priest in 1976, he has served at Our Lady of Mercy, Potomac; St. Pius X, Bowie; St. Bartholomew, Bethesda; and St. Thomas the Apostle, Washington, DC. He also studied for a year in the Dominican Republic and Colombia during the mid 1980s and was Archdiocesan director of priest vocations from 1988-1998.
Msgr. Karl A. Chimiak has been pastor of Sacred Heart, La Plata since 2004, and is celebrating his 25th Jubilee as a priest. He is chaplain of the Maryland State Police Leonardtown and La Plata Barracks; the Charles County Sheriffs Department; and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Nice Bridge Station. He has served 26 years as a U.S. Air Force Reserves chaplain, and has the rank of Colonel. He served on active duty during Desert Storm in 1991. Previous parish assignments include Holy Ghost, Issue; St. Michael, Ridge; St. Michael the Archangel, Silver Spring; St. Matthias, Apostle, Lanham; and St. Margaret of Scotland, Seat Pleasant.
Msgr. Edward J. Filardi became administrator of St. Stephen Martyr in Washington, DC in July 2005 after serving as priest-secretary to Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick and as associate vocations director for the past four years. Ordained in 1994, he previously served as a parochial vicar at Holy Redeemer, Kensington and St. Martin of Tours, Gaithersburg and has been Boy Scout chaplain since 1996.
Msgr. Michael W. Fisher, Vicar General for the Apostolates, was pastor of St. John Neumann, Gaithersburg from 1999 until June 2005. Ordained in 1990, his previous parish assignments include Holy Family, Hillcrest Heights and Sacred Heart, La Plata. He is a member of the Presbyteral Council; Priest Vocation Board; Priest Capital Campaign Advisory Committee; Needy Parish Fund Committee and Permanent Diaconate Vocations Board.
Msgr. V. James Lockman has been pastor of the Church of the Annunciation in Northwest Washington, DC since 2002. Ordained in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1967, his first assignment was St. Camillus in Silver Spring from 1967-1970. His other parish assignments include Shrine of St. Jude, Rockville; Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Washington, DC; St. Mary, Bryantown; and St. Mary of the Mills, Laurel.
Msgr. Peter Nguyen Thanh Long has served the local Vietnamese community since 1977 and is celebrating his 40th anniversary as a priest this year. Born in Nam Dinh, Vietnam, he attended seminary in Saigon, then served in four parishes in Vietnam and as diocesan Director for Evangelization. In 1977, he was named chaplain to the Archdiocese of Washington’s Vietnamese community. Two years later, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Vietnam Mission and then pastor of Our Lady of Vietnam parish, Silver Spring in 1990 when the parish was canonically established.
Msgr. John F. Macfarlane, pastor of St. Elizabeth, Rockville since 1992, was ordained in 1966. Previous parish assignments include Church of the Resurrection, Burtonsville, where he was the founding pastor; St. John the Baptist, Silver Spring; St. Bartholomew, Bethesda; St. Stephen, Martyr, Washington, DC; and Sacred Heart, Bowie. He also served as assistant director of religious education and director of clergy formation during the 1970s.
Msgr. John F. Myslinski, pastor of St. Mary, Rockville since 1999, celebrated his 25th Jubilee of ordination this year. His previous parish assignments include Holy Face, Great Mills; Church of the Annunciation, Washington, DC; and St. Patrick, Rockville.
Msgr. Eddie Tolentino has served as pastor of St. Michael the Archangel, Silver Spring since 2004. His prior parish experience includes Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian on Capitol Hill, where he was associate pastor and then pastor, 1988-2004, and St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Riverdale Park. Ordained in 1984, he completed graduate studies in Rome. He has served as dean of two deaneries (geographic regions of the Archdiocese) on the Vocations Admissions Board, Priest Retirement Board and Council of Priests.
Msgr. Michael Wilson has been pastor of St. Mary of the Mills, Laurel, since 2002. He previously was pastor of St. Raphael, Rockville and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Lexington Park. He also was an associate pastor at Blessed Sacrament and Nativity parishes in Washington, DC and Sacred Heart, Bowie. In the early 1980s, he was associate director and then director of priest vocations. He has served on the Council of Priests and been active as a chaplain with the Knights of Columbus.
