Montgomery County Catholic Schools Celebrate Advent and Christmas

December 10, 2007

Catholic schools in Montgomery County are preparing for Advent and Christmas with projects and pageants. Among the activities planned:

St. Mary School (600 Viers Mill Road, Rockville, MD 20852)
(Principal Sr. Carol Rigali, 301-762-4179)

Students are participating in the Samaritan’s Purse program that provides spiritual and physical aid to people around the world. First they are making 160 shoeboxes full of necessities and special items for the homeless. Then they are performing “Operation Christmas Child,” a children’s musical that is about the service project and its relationship to Christmas. The performance will be held on Tuesday, December 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the main church.

St. Bernadette School (80 University East, Silver Spring, MD 20901)
(Principal Cheri Wood, 301-593-5611)

Every morning during Advent at 8:15 a.m., kindergarten through 2nd grade students gather together in front of the Jesse Tree for Advent prayers. Second graders give the readings and everyone joins in song.

On Wednesday, December 12 from 8:20 – 9:00 a.m., all grades will be working on special seasonal activities. Kindergarteners will partner with sixth graders and seventh graders will help second graders to make candy cane ornaments for their Christmas trees. The ornaments, made out of pipe cleaners and beads, represent Jesus as the Good Shepherd in the legend of the candy cane.

Students in grades 3-5 will create Christmas murals and cards.

Also during this time, first and eighth graders will join together to make and bake St. Lucia buns for their families in preparation for St. Lucia’s feast day on December 13. They also will make star crowns for the boys and St. Lucia crowns for the girls. The following morning, the first graders will don their crowns and serve the St. Lucia buns to their families in this Swedish tradition celebrating the light of Christ and God’s eternal lasting love.

St. Jane de Chantal School (9525 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814)
(Principal Elizabeth Hamilton, 301-530-1221),

Kindergarten through 4th grade students will present a play, “Christmas Comes from the Heart,” that also will include the choir and chimes choir. It will be held in the church on Wednesday, December 12 at 1:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m.

St. Bartholomew School (6900 River Road, Bethesda, MD 20817)
(Principal Kathy Miller, 301-229-5586)

A tradition for over 25 years, St. Bartholomew’s Christmas pageant involves the whole school. Beginning as a modern-day story, the program transitions into the story of Jesus’ birth. It includes solos by eighth graders and instrumentals by sixth graders, plus a Hawaiian song by the kindergarteners. The pageant takes place on Wednesday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the church.

The Archdiocese of Washington is home to 106 archdiocesan and independent Catholic schools, educating nearly 32,000 students in Washington, DC and Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.
