Montgomery County Catholic School Students Invited to the Vatican
October 01, 2010
Twelve students from St. Jane Frances de Chantal have been invited to sing before the Pope during the Christmas holiday.
These students are part of the Pueri Cantores choral group, which is the student choral organization of the Catholic Church. The twelve from St. Jane Frances de Chantal will join 400 from America and 4,000 children from around the world. The children will have several days of rehearsals, and will be visited by Pope Benedict XVI. On January 1, the Pueri Cantores International Congress and Papal Mass will be held at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
Right now, the children are learning the provided packet of music, much of which is in Latin. The school is planning fundraisers to defer some of the cost of the trip.
Internationally, Pueri Cantores is headquartered in the Vatican and involves 60,000 singers from schools and parishes in 30 countries. In the United States, the American Federation is growing at a dramatic rate. This year, nearly 70 dioceses will be served by regional student choral festivals throughout the nation.
Pueri Cantores Mid-Atlantic Festival with students from the Archdioceses of Washington, Philadelphia and Baltimore, and the Dioceses of Arlington and Richmond will be held at the Cathedral of St. Matthews in Washington in April.
