Marriage in Maryland: Securing the Foundation of Family and Society

January 09, 2008

The bishops serving Maryland, including Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, Baltimore Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, and Wilmington Bishop Michael A. Saltarelli, have released a new statement, Marriage in Maryland: Securing the Foundation of Family and Society, which reflects upon the ability of marriage between a man and woman to bring about new life. This unique capacity of the union of man and woman is why marriage must be protected in law.

As the bishops write, “The very basis of civil society rests on marriage and the family, that is, on the joining together of a man and a woman who become husband and wife to each other and mother and father to their children. Marriage assumes a public responsibility for the good of the spouses, the development of the children, and the care of all family members.”

The statement and information on Maryland and the law is being shared with parishioners throughout the state at Masses in January. It is available on this website and through Maryland Catholic Conference.
