Local Catholic Schools Open their Doors to the New School Year on Tuesday

Catholic schools in the District of Columbia and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties are back in session and welcoming students on Tuesday, September 2 for another new school year. Catholic schools in Southern Maryland began on August 26.

Highlighted below are three schools being led by new principals this year.

District of Columbia: St. Thomas More School, 4265 4th Street, SE (202-561-1189)
From 7:50 – 8:05 a.m. on Tuesday, St. Thomas More School will gather the pre-k through 2nd grade students in the church to begin the new school year. Reverend Raymond Moore, pastor for St. Thomas More Parish, will open with prayer and the teachers will be introduced to the students. Principal Bridget Coates will conclude the brief welcome ceremony by giving each student a school pin and armband to wear.

Montgomery County: St. Michael the Archangel School, 824 Wayne Avenue, Silver Spring (301-585-6873)
Superintendent of Schools Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, PhD, will welcome students at St. Michael the Archangel School with Principal Dawn Clemens at 8:00 a.m. Celebrating 75 years this school year, students will find a new playground and picnic area along with a fresh coat of paint for the school.

Prince George’s County: St. Mark the Evangelist School, 7501 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville (301-422-7440)
From 7:40 – 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Reverend John Dillon, pastor for St. Mark the Evangelist Parish, and the faculty of St. Mark the Evangelist School will be greeting students and their families. The National Junior Honor Society students also will welcome students and assist new students with questions and meeting their new teachers.

The Archdiocese of Washington serves about 30,000 students in 98 elementary, secondary, special schools, and early learning centers in the District of Columbia and Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.
