Hundreds Audition Hoping to Sing for the Pope

February 11, 2008

More than 550 people competed this weekend for 250 openings in a Papal Mass Choir that will provide music for the Holy Father’s April 17 Mass at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.

Members of parish music ministries throughout the Archdiocese of Washington and of the Diocese of Arlington Mass Choir had been given one week to register to audition. Ten audition sessions were held in various locations between February 8 and 11.

Each person sang before a panel of two to three judges and was evaluated on overall voice, range and ability to sight-read or to learn music quickly.

Candidates will be notified on February 15 if they were accepted as members of the choir. Seven mandatory rehearsals will take place between March 10 and April 16. The choir will be under the direction of Mr. Tom Stehle, pastoral associate for liturgy and music at Our Lady of Mercy parish in Potomac, Maryland.
