Holy Cross Students to Honor Chief Moose and Other Officers at Mass for Peace

November 07, 2002

The staff and 215 students of Holy Cross elementary school in Garrett Park will honor Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose and several other police officers who will join the school at a special Mass for peace and thanksgiving:

Friday, November 8, 2002
8:30 a.m. Mass
Holy Cross Church
4900 Strathmore Ave., Garrett Park, MD

Officers will join in the entrance procession for the Mass; one will carry the American flag. After Communion (9:00 a.m.), 7th grade student Janine Joly will read a poem she wrote about the sniper experience from a child’s perspective. As Mass ends, students will sing a song of peace and present special thank you scrolls to the officers, who also will be honored with plaques.

Holy Cross School has emphasized peace as well as community service in response to the sniper attacks. While students remained indoors for safety reasons while at school, 6th graders made sock dolls for homeless children and are going to continue making dolls for the homeless throughout the year.

Over the past week, the 108 schools in the Archdiocese of Washington have held prayer services in thanksgiving for life, for all those who kept them safe and for peace in our community.
