Group Home for Developmentally Disabled Adults Opens at Gaithersburg Parish

Archbishop Wuerl to Bless First Rosaria Communities Home

November 05, 2009

A dream whose roots date back ten years has become a reality for parishioners at St. Rose of Lima Catholic parish in Gaithersburg as well as adults with developmental disabilities. Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl will dedicate the Rosaria House, a small group residence for up to four individuals:

Sunday, November 8, 2009
8:45 a.m.: Mass
10:00 a.m.: Dedication (following Mass)
St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church
11701 Clopper Road, Gaithersburg, MD

The house was constructed on St. Rose of Lima property with over $700,000 in construction funding from Montgomery County’s affordable housing fund. Jubilee Association of Maryland will provide residential support services, while parishioners at St. Rose of Lima will work with Potomac Community Resources to provide enrichment opportunities and encourage the inclusion of the residents in the community.

The idea for the house began ten years ago, when parishioners at St. Rose of Lima made a commitment to dedicate a parcel of land to an outreach facility. After two years of research, the St. Rose Task Force requested that the land be used to build a home for adults with developmental disabilities, which is an underserved population in need of housing and other services. The decade-long effort has been a reminder that, as parishioners noted, “God is calling us to raise up the voice with no power or choice.”

This is the first project of Rosaria Communities, Inc., a newly established non-profit owned by the Archdiocese of Washington. Rosaria plans to provide additional affordable housing for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities, and work in partnership with parishes in the Archdiocese of Washington, service providers and other public and private entities to provide high quality, faith-based community oriented homes.

Thomas F. Welch is President and CEO of Rosaria Communities, Inc. and Monsignor Ralph Kuehner is on the Board of Directors.
