Funeral Mass for Cardinal Hickey: Cardinal Baum’s Remarks on Behalf of Pope John Paul II

October 30, 2004

Cardinal William W. Baum, Pope John Paul II’s personal representative to the funeral of Cardinal James A. Hickey, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, delivered the following remarks at the Mass of Christian Burial for Cardinal Hickey, held today:

“The Holy Father offers his heartfelt condolences to Cardinal McCarrick and the clergy, the religious and the faithful laity of the Archdiocese of Washington.

He joins all of us in praying that God grant James Cardinal Hickey the rewards of his long priestly life, a life marked by his devotion to the person of the Holy Father, by his profound Marian piety, and centered on the Eucharist.

To all who are assembled for the Solemn Mass of Christian Burial, the Holy Father cordially imparts his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of consolation and strength in the Lord.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and make perpetual light shine upon him.”
