Former Priest Charged in 28-Year-Old Incident
September 14, 2006
The Archdiocese of Washington has learned from Montgomery County police that William McSherry Stock, a former priest of Washington, has been charged with child abuse, second-degree sex offense and four counts of third-degree sex offense for incidents that occurred 28 years ago. At the time, William Stock was associate pastor of St. Peter, Olney. Stock has been out of ministry since 1985.
This is the second charge filed against Stock. This past May, he was charged in another incident dating to 1980. That was the first allegation against him of which the Archdiocese was aware. The authorities and the Archdiocese of Washington encouraged anyone with relevant information about him to contact the authorities. The Archdiocese also asked individuals to contact the Archdiocesan director of child protection services. An offer of pastoral outreach and counseling has been extended to the men who have come forward.
William Stock was ordained in 1969. He was associate pastor at St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Bethesda (1969-1973); Mt. Calvary, Forestville (1973-1974); St. Peter, Olney (1974-1983); and Our Lady Queen of Peace (1984). He also served as administrator of St. Paul, Damascus from 1984-1985.
Anyone with information regarding inappropriate conduct by William Stock is asked to contact Detective Louvenna Pallas, with the Family Crimes Division of Montgomery County Police, at 240-773-5400. The Archdiocese of Washington encourages anyone with any knowledge of inappropriate conduct by a member of the clergy or an employee or volunteer to contact local authorities and the Archdiocesan director of child protection services, Marcia Zvara, at 301-853-5328.
The Archdiocese of Washington has had a written Child Protection Policy since 1986. The policy is online at www.adw.org; click on “Protecting Our Children.”
