Ecumenical Prayer Services to Mark Week of Christian Unity

January 14, 2002

Churches from throughout the region will host an Ecumenical Celebration of Christian Unity to celebrate the annual worldwide Week of Christian Unity:

Sunday, January 20
4:00 p.m.
Nativity Catholic Church
6000 Georgia Avenue, NW, Washington, DC

Rev. Stephen Tucker of New Commandment Baptist Church and Monsignor Ray East, pastor of Nativity Catholic Church will lead the service. Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, will give the homily.

Music, under the direction of Mr. Marvin Ford, Nativity’s music director, will include choirs from several churches as well as a cello quartet. A free-will offering will benefit the Jobs Partnership of Greater Washington and Lutheran Social Services.

This year’s theme is With You is the Fountain of Life (taken from Psalm 36:5-9). A key part of this year’s service will be prayers for peace and reconciliation, especially in troubled parts of the world. This message of peace is the same one Pope John Paul II and 50 other religious leaders will share as they join in prayer during a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy on January 24.
