Contact your Maryland State Senator Today to Support the BOAST Education Legislation

March 09, 2010

From the Maryland Catholic Conference:

Thanks to the efforts of Catholic school supporters like you, the BOAST Maryland Tax Credit passed the state Senate Budget and Taxation Committee on March 8. The bill, which would help boost scholarships for Catholic school students and grants for Catholic school teachers, will come before the full Senate in the next several days and your help is needed to push it to passage.

BOAST (Building Opportunities for All Students and Teachers) would grant businesses a state income tax credit in exchange for their donations to scholarship programs for nonpublic school students or enrichment programs for public school students. Donations can also be used to provide continuing education grants to public and nonpublic school teachers. The 127,000 students in Maryland’s Catholic and other nonpublic schools save state taxpayers more than $1.5 billion annually in public school costs.

BOAST (SB 385/HB 946) has been endorsed by Gov. Martin O’Malley. Momentum is building to pass this necessary bill this year to preserve the savings provided by nonpublic schools by stemming the tide of enrollment declines and consolidations of Catholic schools.

Action: Please contact your state senator today and urge him or her to support BOAST. Click here to e-mail your senator. The bill will be up for a final Senate vote before the end of the week, so be sure to take action now and encourage others to do the same. Thank you for your continuing support; we will keep you updated as BOAST moves through the legislature.
