Contact your Maryland State Delegate Today-Support the BOAST Education Legislation

March 24, 2010

The BOAST Maryland Tax Credit (SB 385/HB 946) is designed to provide Maryland’s schools with a means of leveraging significantly increased investment from local businesses. BOAST (Building Opportunities for All Students and Teachers) would grant businesses a state income tax credit in exchange for their donations to scholarship programs for nonpublic school students or enrichment programs for public school students. If passed, it has the potential to increase scholarships for Catholic school students, provide grants for Catholic school teachers, and could help to stabilize enrollment at Catholic schools, while also benefiting public school students and teachers. The 127,000 students in Maryland’s Catholic and other nonpublic schools save state taxpayers more than $1.5 billion annually in public school costs, a savings the State of Maryland cannot afford to lose through continued enrollment declines or consolidations at Catholic and non public schools.

Additional information about the bill is available from the Maryland Catholic Conference.

BOAST has been endorsed by Gov. Martin O’Malley. On March 17, BOAST passed the Maryland Senate in a 30-17 vote. It has 75 House co-sponsors, but remains before the House Ways and Means Committee.
