Catholic Schools Superintendent Applauds Scholarship Opportunities for Families

January 23, 2004

The superintendent of Catholic schools for the Archdiocese of Washington, Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, Ph.D., responded to the passage of the 2004 Omnibus Bill by the U.S. Senate on January 22, 2004. The legislation brings new dollars for education in the District of Columbia: $13 million for District of Columbia public schools, $13 million for charter schools and $13 million for a new K-12 private school scholarship program, as well as $1 million to administer and evaluate the program:

“Every family deserves to choose the best educational opportunity for their children. With this legislation, that now will be possible. For the first time, many families in the District of Columbia will have the resources to choose the public, charter or non-public school that best fits their children’s needs. We are committed to working in partnership with educational and government leaders to ensure that all children in our city get the best education possible.”
