Catholic Schools Start Year with Opening Mass and Awards

Over 2,000 Catholic school principals, teachers and staff from across the Archdiocese of Washington will gather to open the school year with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington. Bishop Francisco González, S.F. and Bishop Leonard Olivier, S.V.D. auxiliary bishops of Washington, will concelebrate the Mass. Following the Mass, there will be remarks from Catholic Schools Superintendent Deacon Bert L’Homme, and a ceremony honoring teachers and principals celebrating more than 25 years of service, as well as schools marking 50 or more years of serving the community.

Catholic elementary schools in Calvert and St. Mary’s counties open on Tuesday, August 23; schools in Charles County on Monday, August 29 and schools in Washington, DC, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties on Tuesday, August 30.

There are 98 early learning, elementary and secondary Catholic schools serving over 28,000 students in the District of Columbia and Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.

Below is a list of schools marking special anniversaries this year:

• Montgomery County: Holy Cross School (Garrett Park), 50 years
• Prince George’s County: Holy Redeemer School (College Park), 80 years; St. John the Evangelist School (Clinton), 50 years; St. Matthias School (Lanham), 50 years
• St. Mary’s County: Little Flower School (Great Mills), 125 years
