Catholic Schools Kick Off Year with Opening Mass

More than 3,500 school principals, teachers and staff from the 108 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Washington will begin the new school year with a Mass and awards ceremony:

Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. This will be the first time the new superintendent of schools, Dr. Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, who joined the Archdiocese in July, will gather with the staffs of all of the schools. Among those expected to attend are 10 new elementary school principals.
At the end of Mass, more than 40 educators will be recognized for 25 years of service to Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Washington.
The first day of classes for Catholic schools in Southern Maryland (Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties) will be Tuesday, August 27, with the except of Archbishop Neale School and Mother Catherine Spalding School which will open Tuesday, September 3 due to construction. The first day of classes for Catholic schools in Washington, DC, and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties will be Tuesday, September 3, with the exception of Blessed Sacrament School in DC, which will open September 16 due to construction.
