Catholic Schools Celebrate Back to School

The 108 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Washington are marking the first week of school with fun events including decorations, visits by the new superintendent and liturgies.

Catholic schools in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties start classes August 27, except Archbishop Neale and Mother Catherine Spalding Schools, which open September 3 due to construction. Catholic schools in Washington, DC and Montgomery and Prince Gorge’s Counties open September 3, except Blessed Sacrament in Washington, DC, which opens September 16 due to construction.

Monday, August 26
Gonzaga College High School, 19 Eye St., NW, Washington, DC, 9:40 a.m.-10:50 a.m.: Opening Mass for entire student body in St. Aloysius Church, on the school campus (North Capitol and Eye Sts.).

Tuesday, September 3
GREAT PHOTO OP!! St. Ambrose, 6310 Jason St., Cheverly, 8:15 a.m.: Students are greeted by a school entrance covered with bumblebees–the school mascot–bumblebee pinwheels, bumblebee balloons and bumblebee signs. After students gather, Principal Vince Spadoni leads them in prayer and music.

Our Lady of Lourdes, 7500 Pearl St., Bethesda, 8:30 a.m.: Students welcome new archdiocesan superintendent of schools, Dr. Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill and Father James Meyers, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, dedicates a new gym floor.

St. Ann’s Academy, 4404 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC, 10:30 a.m.: Students start the new year by welcoming new archdiocesan school superintendent, Dr. Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill.

Wednesday, September 4
St. Francis Xavier School, 2700 O St., SE, Washington, DC, 11:00 a.m.: Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, school and business leaders, students from 11 city schools and a student choir celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Center City Consortium, founded in 1997 to revitalize urban Catholic schools, and the public kick-off of a $30 million campaign to support these city schools. Over 65 percent of the students are non-Catholic.

Friday, September 6
St. Bernard, 5811 Riverdale Rd., Riverdale Park, time TBA: The opening school Mass kick-offs off St. Bernard’s 50th anniversary year.
