Catholic Distance University Gala to Honor Cardinal Wuerl and the Meladys

November 14, 2012

Catholic Distance University will celebrate its annual gala to be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel in Arlington, Virginia. This year’s event will honor His Eminence, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Dr. Margaret and Ambassador Thomas Melady, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church. CDU honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the university and its mission with the Founders Award.

Cardinal Wuerl will be honored for his leadership in the New Evangelization and for his friendship and encouragement to CDU for many years. He was the keynote speaker for Catholic Distance University’s 25th Anniversary Gala lecture in 2008, and he will be the Main Celebrant at the Mass for the 2012 Gala.

Dr. Margaret and Ambassador Thomas Melady have been long time supporters of Catholic Distance University. Dr. Melady currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees. Ambassador Melady chaired the CDU Advisory Board.
Past Founders Award recipients include Bishop Paul Loverde, EWTN, Our Sunday Visitor, Bishop Thomas J. Welsh, Blanche and Jacques Moore, Bertha and Joseph Braddock, Virgil Dechant, and the late former Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Pietro Sambi.

The Thomas J. Welsh Parish Award given in honor of the late Bishop Thomas J. Welsh, founder of CDU and first Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, will be awarded to Holy Spirit Catholic Church for its loyal support of CDU with annual donations to the university’s annual appeal and Msgr. McMurtie Scholarship Fund.

CDU was established nearly 30 years ago primarily to serve the laity after the Second Vatican Council with inspiring theological education and faith formation at all academic levels using the flexibility of distance education. Today, CDU is an online university that has embraced the vision of Pope Benedict XVI to use the technology of social communication for the New Evangelization. The Internet has helped CDU create a new Catholic university that reaches throughout the globe with inspiring, accredited academic programs in Theology and adult faith development.

Gala activities include Mass at 5:00 PM, a cocktail reception at 6:30 PM, followed by a black-tie dinner, auction, and awards. All events will be held at the Weston Arlington Gateway Hotel in Arlington, VA.
