Catholic Community Services CEO Welcomes Archbishop-designate Wuerl

May 16, 2006

The following statement is from Edward J. Orzechowski, President and CEO of Catholic Community Services of the Archdiocese of Washington, regarding the appointment of Bishop Donald W. Wuerl as the new Archbishop of Washington:

“The Holy Father’s selection of Bishop Donald W. Wuerl to serve as the new Archbishop of Washington is good news for all of us who are engaged in the social justice work of the Church. I welcome Archbishop-designate Wuerl on behalf of the board of directors, 800 employees, and the more than 3,000 volunteers of Catholic Community Services.

“I also want to thank Cardinal Theodore McCarrick for his leadership and support. Cardinal McCarrick brought the Gospel to the people. His presence gave an enormous visibility to the Church, and a message of warm acceptance and genuine welcoming of a loving God. In all he did, he demonstrated a deep commitment to the spiritual, social, and educational work of the Church. He will be deeply missed.

“I look forward to working with Archbishop-designate Wuerl to continue to open doors to help and hope for those in need in the nation’s capital.”
