Cardinal Wuerl Issues Statement on Elevation to College of Cardinals
November 20, 2010
Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, was among 24 new Cardinals created today by Pope Benedict XVI at a consistory at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.
Following the consistory, Cardinal Wuerl said, “I am humbled by our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI’s trust in me as shepherd of this flock and pledge to him my renewed fidelity, affection and loyalty. This is a very exciting moment.”
Cardinal Wuerl said it was “a glorious day” with the basilica filled with people from around the world, showing the universality of the church.
“Every believer, every Catholic has a tie with the pope, but the cardinals — because they are asked to work very, very closely with him — have a special bond,” he said, and the visible sign of that, he said, is the red hat.
