Cardinal Wuerl Celebrates Christmas in Washington
December 17, 2010
Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, will celebrate Christmas this year – his first as a Cardinal – with the blessing of the crèche and Christmas Eve Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. He also will be a guest on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace on December 26.
Friday, December 24 – Mass at 10:00 p.m. – NEW TIME!
9:15 p.m.: Christmas Concert followed by 10:00 p.m. Blessing of the Creche and Mass
Cathedral of Saint Matthew, 1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20036
In a twist on tradition, the midnight Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew is moved to a new time this year, as Pope Benedict XVI has done at the Vatican. At 9:15 p.m., the Schola Cantorum and Festival Singers will lead worshippers in hymns. Then, at 10:00 p.m., Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl will bless the crèche at the St. Anthony Chapel and celebrate Mass.
Saturday, December 25
Noon: Christmas Day Mass
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
400 Michigan Ave., NE, Washington, DC 20017
Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl will be the principal celebrant and homilist at this Mass that will begin with a prayer at the creche. The Mass will be attended by thousands of worshippers.
The Mass will be broadcast live on EWTN and Sirius XM Satellite (The Catholic Channel).
Also that day, in an annual tradition, volunteers will serve a free Christmas dinner for more than 1,400 people who are alone or in need. The dinner will be served in the Shrine cafeteria from 12:15 p.m.-2:30 p.m., and volunteers will deliver meals to families throughout the region.
