As many as 300 people will process through the streets of Northwest Washington in a very visual celebration of faith after Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, celebrates Mass in honor of the Feast of Corpus Christi at The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
Sunday, June 26, 2011
Mass at 12:30 p.m.
The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament
3630 Quesada Street, NW
The Feast of Corpus Christi is the Blessed Sacrament parish’s patronal feast. This event is the pinnacle of the celebrations of Blessed Sacrament’s Centennial Year.
An orchestra will perform at the Mass, during which the choir will sing a hymn commissioned in honor of the parish’s 100th anniversary. The song was composed by Dr. Leo Nester from The Catholic University’s School of Music.
Following the Mass, there will be a solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the neighborhood as a reminder to the community of the Catholics’ belief in the real presence of Jesus.
Multiple parish organizations will participate in the procession. The Boy Scouts will carry the Colors, sodalists and members of the Filipino community will carry banners, and the choirs will lead the singing. Closing Benediction will take place in the church following the procession.
The Archdiocese of Washington is home to 590,000 Catholics living in Washington, DC and five Maryland counties: Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s.
