Cardinal Donald Wuerl on the Death of Archbishop Pietro Sambi

July 28, 2011

I am deeply saddened at the death of Archbishop Pietro Sambi. All of us in the Archdiocese of Washington have felt a particular bond with him, especially since we worked together to welcome our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, here in 2008. Personally, I feel the loss because, since his arrival in Washington five years ago, we had many occasions to collaborate. Over the years we developed a friendship that I will greatly miss. We all recognize his extraordinary work as the Pope’s personal representative and the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, his sense of humor, his friendly and open manner, and his clear love for the Church and our Holy Father. We offer our sympathy to his family and we ask the Lord to grant him eternal rest.
