Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, offers congratulations and prayerful best wishes to two U.S. archbishops named to the College of Cardinals
January 06, 2012
It is with great joy that I received the news of the Holy Father’s announcement of the elevation of two of my brother bishops to the College of Cardinals.
Over the years, Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan has demonstrated his love for the Church through tireless dedication and service. I have personally had the pleasure of working closely with him when he was Rector at the Pontifical North American College and later when he was named Archbishop of New York. He has shown effective leadership as well in his current role as president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
I have had the privilege of working with Cardinal-designate Edwin O’Brien for many years, first when he was Rector at the Pontifical North American College, and then in his role as Archbishop of Baltimore. Together in the Maryland Catholic Conference, we worked to promote the public policy interests of the Church in our respective dioceses. I look forward to continued collaboration with him in his new role with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
This news is a wonderful recognition of both bishops and their gifts and abilities, as well as an honor for the Church in the United States. The Universal Church is well-served by these faithful and dedicated leaders.
