Archdiocese Schools, Catholic Charities and Parishes Continue to Reach Out to Hurricane Survivors

September 22, 2005

The Archdiocese of Washington’s parishes, schools and social service agencies continue to reach out to families and individuals affected by Hurricane Katrina:

Schools

At least 90 students from the Gulf Coast have enrolled in archdiocesan and independent Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Washington. Tuition has been waived for those in financial need.

Parents and guardians wishing to enroll students displaced because of Hurricane Katrina may contact local schools directly or the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools Office at 301-853-4518. School contact information and maps are online at www.catholicschoolswork.org.

In addition to welcoming students, schools have held prayer services, fundraisers and other events to reach out to those affected by the hurricane. On September 16, Blessed Sacrament School in Northwest Washington welcomed New Orleans Archbishop Alfred Hughes, who met with six students displaced by the hurricane and now enrolled in the school, their families and classmates.

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington is working with over 4005 hurricane survivors; at least 25 families are being placed in their own homes through Catholic Charities in space offered by Catholic parishioners and parishes.

Individuals and families displaced by Hurricane Katrina and in need of short- or long-term assistance in the Washington area, and parishioners who can offer vacant apartments or other services, may call the Catholic Charities Katrina hotline: 202-772-1212, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Parishes that would like to “adopt” hurricane survivors may contact Christina Byrne at 202-772-1208.

Parishes

All 140 parishes of the Archdiocese of Washington are holding special collections this month for hurricane relief. All funds will go to affected dioceses and Catholic relief organizations for hurricane relief. In addition, parishes have undertaken many activities, including prayer services and fundraisers, have organized donations, assisted displaced families and partnered with parishes in need in the Gulf Coast region.

The Archdiocese of Washington includes District of Columbia and Montgomery, Prince George’s, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.
