Dr. Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, former vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Trinity College in Washington, DC, has been named superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Washington. She will start her new position on July 1.

As superintendent, Dr. Weitzel-O’Neill will have responsibility for the oversight of 83 archdiocesan pre-school, elementary and secondary schools and coordination with 23 independent Catholic schools in Washington, DC and suburban and southern Maryland. The schools serve more than 34,500 students from diverse backgrounds.

“I am delighted to have Dr. Weitzel-O’Neill join our team as superintendent of Catholic schools,” said Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington. “She brings not only impressive professional experience to this position, but a strong personal commitment to and knowledge of our local Catholic schools, gained through her experience as a parishioner and involved parent.”

Dr. Weitzel-O’Neill said, “I am looking forward to moving into a new phase in my professional life, while continuing my commitment to Catholic education. Both my professional and personal experiences have given me a real appreciation for the academic excellence and faith-based commitment of Catholic education. I look forward to working with Cardinal McCarrick, with Sr. Bernadette Glodek, the secretary for Catholic education, and especially with the wonderful principals and staffs of the Catholic schools in this area.”

Dr. Weitzel-O’Neill held a number of positions at Trinity College from 1978 to 2000. She began as a lecturer in sociology, became an assistant and then associate professor. In 1991, she was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and, in 1993, also became the vice president of academic affairs. After a sabbatical, she began working as a consultant on education.

Prior to joining Trinity, Dr. Weitzel-O’Neill was a lecturer in sociology at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD from 1977-1978; an instructor, then lecturer in sociology at the University of Maryland in College Park during the 1974 and 1977 academic years; and was a senior analyst for BDM Corporation in Vienna, VA from 1974-1975.

She is married to Robert T. O’Neill, is the mother of two adult children and a member of St. John the Baptist parish in Silver Spring, MD, where she serves on the parish council and chairs the finance committee.
