Archdiocese Launches Youth Video Contest to Welcome Pope Benedict to Washington!

February 19, 2008

How would YOU welcome Pope Benedict to your city? A youth video contest to welcome Pope Benedict to Washington is being sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington. Winners will receive tickets to the April 17 Papal Mass at Nationals Park and have the opportunity for their video to be shown as part of the pre-Mass program that morning.

“We have had so much interest in the Holy Father’s visit from the students and youth in our parishes that we wanted to involve them in a special way,” said Susan Gibbs, archdiocesan director of communications. “This is a great way for them to welcome Pope Benedict, share their faith and show their enthusiasm.”

The two-minute videos must be original and will be judged on creativity, not polish. The submission deadline is March 17. Winners will be announced on April 3.

Participants must be from the Archdiocese of Washington, Archdiocese of Baltimore or Diocese of Arlington; be between kindergarten and Grade 12; and have parent/guardian permission. Complete guidelines online at

The Archdiocese of Washington is home to 580,000 Catholics, 140 parishes and 106 Catholic schools serving 31,000 students. More than 23,000 youth participate in parish (non-school) religious education and youth ministry programs.
